Claire Benedict is a young woman who works tirelessly for her church and for the poor. But when tragedy strikes, Claire must interrupt her good works and find employment to support her family. Her new job takes her to South Plains, a small town that’s fallen on hard times; where poverty has made the residents forget how to be kind to their neighbors … including their minister.
But Claire’s instinct to help others can’t be denied for long. She knows she can create beauty in the poorest of places; and her charitable work—that was once interrupted—finds new focus in South Plains. Before long, Claire’s efforts catch the attention of one person who wants to help … then another. One by one, the citizens of South Plains join forces with Claire in transforming their town and the souls of its residents.

Written in 1885, this is another Alden novel I haven’t read, and like all her books has a Christian message. Regardless of the difference in how people lived in 1885 and how we live today, this story is timeless in that it is how one can rise above adversity. The Benedict family’s circumstances change overnight. Where once they were wealthy, they are now poor and the older daughter, Claire, is the only one capable of doing anything about earning a living to support her mother and sister. At first sight of her new home as a music teacher in an Academy in the small town of South Plains, far away from her home city, she feels bitter about having to live in such reduced circumstances, until she hears a sermon that seems to resonate in her heart. Her attitude changes overnight and she decides to bring her organising ability and capacity for creative thinking to do something about the deplorable state of the local church. She speaks about her ideas to her music students, and her enthusiasm inspires them to see that they can make a difference, even if only in a very small way.But Claire is also a committed Christian and reaches out to those who don’t know Christ as their Saviour. The story of one person whose life was changed caused me to shed a few tears, and I was even more moved when Mrs Alden said that the person was real and was alive at the time she wrote the book. However, life is not all roses and Mrs Alden doesn’t shrink from inserting a few thorns along the way. Claire’s interrupted life becomes her new life and it is fuller and richer than she could possibly have imagined.
Very well-written and edited as all Mrs Alden’s books are, this story is very easy to read, one I thoroughly enjoyed, and can recommend.

Interrupted edition by Isabella Alden Pansy Jenny Berlin Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
I really enjoy these great stories of old times gone by. They speak today to the open heart today as they did then.
This is a special Christian book that inspires one to live their life for Christ. It is a book I will
recommend to my church friends and young adults.
Isabella Alden was a master story teller! The book interrupted is one that reaches into our own heart to examine our own character and bring to light how each of us would react to the same type of complications that came into the life of them main character. It is the story of man makes plans...but then God...
Another good novel by Isabella Alden.
I really liked this story it inspired me on a deep level that twists and turns that lead us away from hoped for dreams, even if they look tragic, can be part of a bigger and better plan. I need this story at a phase in my life of great disappointment from a dying dream. Interrupted is one of those stories that transcends 100 plus years to deliver a very timely message to anyone struggling with disappointed hopes.
Another Pansy triumph!! This book has a few twists and turns but mostly it's full of deep insight as to why people do what they do....lots of really impressive truths about the complicated motives folks have and how they play out in our lives. That depth of character study and intelligent, non-sentimental writing is the hallmark of Isabella Alden's best works. I know I'm reading a great book when I immediately want to know more about the characters when I close the last page--and that's so wth this one!
Sometimes the things that seem to "interrupt" our lives end up BECOMING our lives. I loved this story of a young woman's struggle to deal with the death of her wealthy father and the subsequent loss of the family home. For the first time in her life, 20-something Claire must work for a living. Alden's books all have a Christian flavor so if this would offend you this is not the book for you. This did NOT offend me and I love her books.
